Church of Scientology Inaugurates New Landmark Home in California’s Capital

Church of Scientology Inaugurates New Landmark Home in California’s Capital

California’s capital celebrated the grand opening of the new Church of Scientology of Sacramento on Saturday, January 28. The dedication ceremony was attended by more than 2,500 Scientologists, guests and city, state and national officials.

Photos
The Church’s new home, located just blocks from the State Capitol, is one of the city’s most prominent architectural landmarks. Originally opened in 1930 as the Ramona Hotel and designed by California’s first state architect, the building is Sacramento’s finest surviving example of the Spanish Colonial Revival style. The Church meticulously preserved the building’s structure and restored its features to their original glory, including the characteristic stucco, ornamental glazed brick and terra cotta tiles, decorative iron accents and the original blade sign. All restoration was planned and executed for minimal environmental impact and maximum sustainability, meeting the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification standards.
The grand opening of the new Church was distinguished by the presence of Mr. David Miscavige, Chairman of the Board Religious Technology Center and ecclesiastical leader of the Scientology religion, who officiated at the ceremony.
In signifying the importance of this new Church, Mr. Miscavige said: “The dedication of this new Church signifies a solemn pledge. It’s a pledge to employ the full measure of what lies within those walls on behalf of this City. It’s a pledge to make a world of which we can be proud. A world without insanity, criminality, illiteracy and immorality; a world where the able can prosper, where honest beings have rights and where all are free to rise to greater heights. That’s our responsibility as Scientologists. And, yes, a responsibility we willingly embrace.”
Also in attendance and commemorating the occasion were Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson; California State Assembly Member Mike Gatto; Greater Sacramento Urban League president David DeLuz; Interfaith Council of Greater Sacramento president Jon Fish; and International Faith-Based Council president and founder Bishop Ron Allen.
In his salutatory address, Mayor Kevin Johnson welcomed and acknowledged the Church for demonstrating its commitment to the city: “Sacramento is the most diverse city in the country, and your church and what you guys are doing is diverse. This building here is not just a building for you—it’s a building for the community. It’s a building that will help us revitalize this downtown area. The Church of Scientology came to us and said, ‘Look, we want to help. We want to take a historic building and preserve it and renovate it and make it a masterpiece for the downtown area showcase.’ We really wanted to transform Sacramento into the greenest region in the country and a hub for clean technology and you folks are helping to make that a reality. You have done your part.
California State Assembly Member Mike Gatto commended the work of the Sacramento Church of Scientology and its Citizens Commission on Human Rights to protect children from psychotropic drugging: “These kids may never have the chance to find themselves before being prescribed a drug. They may never know what it means to feel their own pure emotion in their hearts and their own thoughts in their minds. You can rest assured I will continue to do everything in my power to see that every legislator and parent hears your voice, and thereby gains their own power to act for the sake of all children in California.”
Interfaith Council of Greater Sacramento President Jon Fish recognized the Church’s effective contribution to the community, including its humanitarian program utilizing L. Ron Hubbard’s book, The Way to Happiness: “I can’t tell you how uplifting it is to know there are people out there every day—the Scientologists—addressing moral virtues in society, and who really know what they’re doing. For those reasons and so many more, we welcome members of the Church of Scientology. We know this will always be a home of friendship toward us and others. There shall always be an open invitation and an outstretched hand.”
Highlighting the Church’s work in human rights education, Greater Sacramento Urban League president David DeLuz said: “You are educating people on their rights and thereby building up the coming generation who we’ll rely on to protect those rights for everyone, no matter their race, color, creed or religion. Here in California’s capital, we come from everywhere… We need to nurture that, which is exactly what you’re doing. Because this is a Church, not just open to everyone but you freely give to anyone the many tools you have. That’s why this Church is as much a gift to Sacramento as to your parishioners.”
Citing the Church’s worldwide Truth About Drugs education program, International Faith-Based Coalition founder and president Bishop Ron Allen said: “I’ve always said ‘so goes California, so goes the nation.’ Cleaning up the capital and blanketing it with Truth About Drugs materials will cause an effect so great it will ripple out across America. This program is the answer to the global epidemic. I want it mandatory for school children across America to go through the Truth About Drugs curriculum.”

Human Rights Day 2011: Church of Scientology Spearheading Human Rights Education

Human rights are the rights that belong to everyone without exception—to people of any color, creed, age, ethnicity or gender. But as United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon pointed out in his Human Rights Day message this year, “…unless we know them, unless we demand they be respected, and unless we defend our rights — and the right of others — to exercise them, they will be just words in a decades-old document.”

To make the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights known to all, the Church of Scientology has undertaken a massive human rights education initiative, reaching more than 180 million people in 2011 with the information on human rights in 17 languages.

Gaetano Cerchiara: Championing the Rights of Others

Meet a Scientologist—Gaetano Cerchiara: Championing the Rights of Others Cision Wire

A successful real estate agent, Gaetano Cerchiara’s passion is human rights. His video is one of 200 “Meet a Scientologist” videos available on the Scientology website at http://www.scientology.org/.

Gaetano Cerchiara had it made—or so it seemed. He appeared to be happy, with a good job and financial security. But he knew something was missing.“I felt there had to be more to life than the material. Every night I went to bed with unanswered questions,” he says. “My life was full of question marks.”
Learning about Scientology from a friend in 1993, the religion’s spirituality and emphasis on helping others impressed him immediately.“Finally I found something that explained what I’d only had a vague feeling about before,” Cerchiara says.

Several years ago his sister Fiorella, co-founder and president of the Association for Human Rights and Tolerance of Italy, introduced Gaetano to the Scientology-sponsored human rights initiative and asked him to help. “Fiorella opened my eyes to human rights violations that are going on today, particularly those affecting children and youth,” says Gaetano. “I felt I had to take responsibility to make others aware of this, so I joined the Association.”

In 2007, an educator from Accra, Ghana asked for help to raise funds for a school in his city. The Church of Scientology of Milano and the Association for Human Rights and Tolerance of Italy took on the project and the school was opened in 2008. Continuing their work in Ghana, they built another school in the village of Twewaa in January 2010 that provides elementary education for the first time for the children of the community and the surrounding area.

“Human rights is a core belief in Scientology,” says Gaetano Cerchiara. “It is part of the Scientology Creed and the Code of a Scientologist. To me, it is intolerable when children are abused or deprived of their right to an education and a future. I am determined to do everything in my power to make human rights a fact, and I firmly believe we can do so.”

The "Meet a Scientologist" videos are part of the Church's continuing online informational program.

These unique, rapid-fire interviews show Scientologists from many professions at home and work and include unusual sights, such as a stunt pilot at work in his plane, the studio of a film robotics expert, skydivers jumping from planes and a professional entertainer juggling with a running chain saw. There are also mothers, fathers, store managers and owners, teachers, dentists, musicians, an IT manager, and a bus driver.

The "Meet a Scientologist" video series is new to the Church of Scientology YouTube Channel, added on August 18. The production schedule for the series will bring the number of documentary videos up to 150 in the immediate future. Concurrently, the Church of Scientology is separately conducting a cross-platform ad campaign on spiritual values that includes Internet and video ads, as well as television commercials on MTV, Discovery, ESPN2, The Learning Channel, CNBC, MSNBC, CNN, Fox News, Fox Sports, and others.

A pioneer and leader in the online religious community, in April 2008 the Church of Scientology became the first religion to create its own YouTube Video Channel. With broadcast-quality videos and a unique video player, it has been seen by over 2.2 million visitors.

Scientology Churches call for end to discrimination on Human Rights Day

Youth in 40 Nations Speak Up for Human Rights
Thousands of youth in more than 40 nations, representing Scientology Churches and Youth for Human Rights International chapters, organized and participated in Human Rights Walks, educational forums and interactive seminars December 10 in observance of the 62nd anniversary of ratification of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Centered on “Speak Up, Stop Discrimination” which is this year’s United Nations theme for Human Rights Day, events ran the gamut from a forum on human trafficking in Pasadena, California, to Walks for Human Rights in over 30 countries to seminars on basic human rights in Pakistan.

Those walking for human rights handed out thousands of Youth for Human Rights booklets that present the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration in words anyone can understand.

“When young people hear about hate crimes and discrimination happening in their areas, they want to take action and speak out,” says Tracie Morrow, Human Rights Youth Coordinator for the Church of Scientology International. “How can they be silent when they witness bullying in their own school or read about an imam attacked in New York solely because of his religion or an Ecuadorian immigrant murdered by a mob in a heinous hate crime?”

Morrow pointed to the State of Chiapas in Mexico as an example of what can be accomplished. When a national survey by the Secretary of Education of Mexico found that 50 percent of high school students in Chiapas admitted to discriminating against others in school, the government decided to take effective action on the issue and with information provided by Youth for Human Rights of Mexico, ratified a change to their constitution to include the full 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and make human rights education in school mandatory.

“The first Mexican state to take this step, Chiapas is setting an example for Mexico and the rest of the world,” says Morrow.

The Mexico Ministry of Education followed the Chiapas lead and printed 10,000 copies of YHRI’s booklet What are Human Rights? to mark Human Rights Day.

International Human Rights Day events by Churches of Scientology and Youth for Human Rights were held on six continents, in Austria, Australia, Belgium, Cameroon, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, New Zealand, Pakistan, Panama, Russia, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine, UK, USA and Zambia.

The Human Rights Department of the Church of Scientology is a proud supporter of Youth for Human Rights International, a secular nonprofit organization founded in 2001. YHRI’s purpose is to teach young people about human rights, specifically the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, so they become advocates for peace and tolerance.
